Why is the Palm Pre App Store So Empty?

Palm has just sent words to developers, anxious to get their hands on the SDK, that it wouldn’t be available until late summer.

That’s bad news as the iPhone has had nearly a 1 full year jump on apps and is over 50,000 strong.  The apps we’ve downloaded by and large are fantastic.  I prefer the NY Times and Fandango Pre versions to the iPhone versions.  We’ll see how the rest of the apps fare, and if developers take to the new OS in droves.  That’s what it’s going to take for the Pre to be anywhere near successful.  Ultimately if Sprint wants to get the most of their exclusivity, they’d do well to help the SDK out the door to get the app store up and running to full speed.
