Springpad Quick Review (Apple App of the Day)
My new best friend
I have happily been using Evernote for a long time now. Recently I’ve been seeing several sites talk about Springpad possibly being an Evernote killer. It’s time to find out if there’s any truth to this.
After you’ve signed up for the free service, you’re presented with this screen. It allows you to add notes by type, use the barcode scanner, add note by location, or by a photo. Most of these are straight forward. Photo, clearly allows you to choose from your on-phone albums or take a new photo. By location brings up a bunch of locations (businesses in my case( nearby and supplies some basic information about the business; website, address, phone, etc.
Where things get a little interesting is adding by type. There’s lots to choose from here, and frankly it might be where the app tries to add too much and becomes complicated. No it’s not complicated to choose a note type, but it add a layer of complexity to the app. But let’s dive in deeper.
Springpad really allows you to connect with others using Springpad. Nearly an Evernote with social ability. For example, to ad a note I clicked on “by type” and then chose product. You’re presented with two options. The first is simply to type your text and save it. Alternatively, type your text and search for it. I typed Coke Zero, as I was drinking one at the time, and was presented with several options other Springpad users apparently listed as notes. Interesting. Already makes me wonder if/how I should be using this for my business?
Where the app really shines is the ability to take your own notes, or use/share notes with others. As another example I also clicked restaurant as my note type and simply typed “steak” into the field and hit search. It brought up all the steak places near my location. Sure many apps can do that, but remember this is a note taking app that you can now flag, comment on save for future reference. Suddenly I’m starting to like this app.
Interestingly enough, I’ve had this installed for a little bit now and have played briefly with it. Not until creating this review did I get deeper into it’s functionality. I can now really appreciate this app and I will start using it regularly for the next few weeks at least for a longer deeper test.
Still sticking with the restaurant theme here, I tried clicking on a few other restaurants. You can save them to lists you create such as restaurants I need to try, or places I’ve eaten. You can see what others have said (other Springs) and so forth. Pretty cool really.
The deeper you get into this app the more it shines. I happen to enjoy good wine and there’s a category note for wines. I typed Camus and hit search. I was given a lot of data that I now then didn’t have to enter myself. I can create my own notes, tasting notes, need to buy notes, and place them into any list I create…“Need to buy wines”.
Yeah this has been a quick down and dirty review of Springpad. Is it an Evernote killer? Quite possibly. I need to get back to you on that after I spend more time with it. However, I have it on my iPhone and on my Droid Incredible. First impressions are good so far. My advice is to live with the app for a week or two to learn it’s potential.
